Travel Made EasyAt the center of the Atlanta Airport Area is the bustling Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (H-JAIA), the world’s busiest airport, full of helpful people ready to get you where you’re going. The Atlanta Airport Area Guide has information and maps so you can find everything you need in and around the airport. Hartsfield-Jackson has improved the ease of travel for customers by adding 10 new, efficient security lanes—4 in Terminal South and 6 in Terminal North—for a total of 32 lanes at 3 separate checkpoints. In addition, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has launched its Diamond Self-Select lane program in Atlanta, designed to enhance efficiency as well as security. Travelers can now choose from three lane categories at security checkpoints: Black Diamond for expert and frequent business travelers; Blue Square for casual travelers with carry-on items; and Green Circle for people traveling with young children or who may need assistance. “These new security lanes and more convenient screening procedures will decrease checkpoint wait times,” says Ben DeCosta, aviation general manager. “Our goal at Hartsfield-Jackson is to make our airport a more hassle-free experience for our customers.” You can find estimated security checkpoint wait times at the H-JAIA website, www.atlanta-airport.com. The Airport Information and Ground Transportation Center at Hartsfield-Jackson, located in the Arrivals Lobby beside Hertz Car Rental, offers travelers information and assistance with transportation services. The Center is open Mon-Fri, 7am-11pm. Call 404-530-4249 for more info. The entrance to MARTA’s Airport Station is inside the western end of the airport’s main terminal; the fare gates are just a few feet from Baggage Claim. HATMA, the Hartsfield Area Transportation Management Association, eases the gas crunch and traffic congestion for Hartsfield-Jackson commuters by offering incentives for carpoolers and by coordinating discount MARTA rail tickets.
Consolidated Rental Car (CONRAC)More than 2 million passengers complete rental car transactions each year at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. In order to meet current needs and anticipated demands for rental vehicles, Hartsfield-Jackson is building a state-of-the-art Consolidated Rental Car (CONRAC) facility. When it opens in November 2009, CONRAC will house all Airport rental car companies and their associated operations, including customer service, administrative offices, ready/return parking, fueling and maintenance facilities. The 67.5-acre CONRAC facility is located across Interstate 85 from the Airport and will connect to the existing passenger terminals via an Automated People Mover (APM) train system. The APM can move more than 10,000 passengers an hour to and from the passenger terminal along the 1.6 mile long elevated guideway. The trip between the terminal and the CONRAC APM station will be approximately five minutes. A stop at the Georgia International Convention Center (GICC) will provide direct passenger access to the facility during conventions and events. By centralizing all rental car operations adjacent to the Airport, CONRAC will eliminate the need for rental agency shuttle buses and dramatically reduce the number of rental cars on terminal roadways. This should help minimize the Airport’s carbon footprint by improving overall traffic flow around the passenger terminal. CONRAC is one of several projects included in Hartsfield-Jackson’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP). The $6 billion-plus program supports the Airport’s overall mission by planning, designing, building and maintaining facilities to meet projected growth in domestic and international travel. CIP projects reduce flight delays, increase airfield and terminal capacity, enhance overall customer service, and substantially contribute to Georgia’s economic development. CONRAC Features
Automated People Mover (APM) ProjectTo provide easy customer access, a new and distinct APM system will operate from the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport's Central Passenger Terminal Complex (CPTC) to the new Consolidated Rental Car (CONRAC) facility, with an intermediate stop at the Georgia International Convention Center (GICC). Planned to open in November, 2009, this APM system will be 1.5 miles long, with a dual lane elevated guideway, and have approximately 10 minute round trip times with 2.5 minute wait times at stations. The system will be operated and maintained by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of America, and incorporate a Maintenance and Storage Facility. MHJIT ExtensionThe extension of the existing APM to the forthcoming new Maynard H. Jackson, Jr., International Terminal (MHJIT) will serve as the primary passenger connection to the existing CPTC and concourses. Currently scheduled for operation in early 2012, the 1,200 foot extension to the east includes:
